The image above represents a retro-fitted frame in a condenser. When the retro fit is done, the original u-joint or metal expansion joint is removed. The landing bar is welded to the condenser wall. It is important to make sure the landing bar is welded at level around the wall so that the groove accepts the bulb of the expansion joint evenly around the perimeter of the condenser. The clamp down bar is then put in place on top of the bulb facing the interior of the condenser. It is bolted into place at 150 foot pounds of torque. The brighter metal in the picture is the shield which fits over the expansion joint. The shield is generally made of stainless steel and protects the rubber cover of the expansion joint from exposure to the high temperatures of steam being returned to the condenser.
